Why lord dalhousie is known as the maker of modern lndia?

Lord Dalhousie was appointed as the Governor General of India from 1848-1856. He is known as the maker of the modern India due to following reasons :

● The present system of Education that we follow was firstly proposed by Lord Dalhousie. The anglo vernacular education system is the education system that was started by Dalhousie.

● He started the very first postal stamp system in India by passing Post Office Act, 1854.

● He abolished the practice of Sati and female infanticides by agreeing to the propositions made by Raja Rammohan Roy.

● The present system of IAS was also given by Lord Dalhousie by delegating important powers like justice, police and land revenue to the District Magistrates.

● Introduction of Telegraph in India. First Telegraph system in India being from Calcutta to Agra in 1854.

● He also started the system of PWD- Public Works Department and our country still follows this.
