why lord vishnu is the preserver and lord shiva is the destroyer?

Lord Vishnu is the preserver b'coz whenever he born in this world in any of the avataar he came to save us from the different kinds of problems and Lord Shiva is destroyer b'coz he has the power to destroy anything or the whole world by his third eye....
