Why lower pressure is needed for conduction electricity through gases?

Due to the electric field, the gas gets ionised, releasing electrons which move towards the anode, thus constituting the electric current. A low pressure is required as at high pressure the movement of the electrons will be retarded due to collisions with the molecules/atoms of the gas.

Answer:
Explanation:
Gases begin to conduct electricity at low pressure because
(a) At low pressures gases turn of plasma
(b) Colliding electrons can acquire higher kinetic energy due to increased mean free path leading to ionisation of atoms
(c) Atoms break up into electrons and protons
(d) The electrons in atoms can move freely at low pressures
