why luggages should be tied if kept on the roof of the car

If the car accelarates from rest, it comes in motion but the luggage tend to maintain their state of rest due to INERTIA OF REST. Hence they can fall forward.

if luggage's are kept on the roof of the car then it must be tied properly because when the car moves forward there is always a possibility that the luggage will move backwards due to inertia
and will fall down.....
