Why magnesium ribbon be cleaned by sand paper before burning??

Magnesium ribbon should be clean before burning in air because it has a protective layer of ' basic magnesium carbonate' which came in contact with it by moist in air.So to remove that layer we should clean it by sand paper.

this is one of question that is mostly asked in board examination
magnesium ribbon is cleaned by sand paper before burning because :-
as we know that magnesium is highly reactive metal at the upper of reactivity series
due to highly reactive in nature when the magnesium is kept in air for a long time it get covered with a layer of magnesium oxide
as the magnesium react with air to form magnesium oxide deposit on the surface of magnesium metal.
magnesium oxide prevent magnesium to react with other element or combustion.
so to remove the oxide layer of magnesium it should be cleaned before burning by Sandpaper and further it can be burn
reaction that so when the magnesium is kept in air:-
Mg ( s ) + O 2 ( g ) = MgO ( s )
so simply to remove the oxide of magnesium it should be cleaned by Sandpaper.
