Magnesium ribbon is cleaned with sandpaper before combustion because it has a layer of magnesium carbonate on it's surface and it's highly reactive with air so that's why it is cleaned before combustion.
Hope you like it.

poonamchoudhary12: layer of magnesium carbonate or layer of magnesium oxide
jatin892: it is layer of magnesium oxide but reacting further with o2 it get converted into carbonate
poonamchoudhary12: thanks
poonamchoudhary12: but firstly it is a layer of oxide
poonamchoudhary12: am i right
jatin892: yes, it is correct for exam

♤ When Magnesium ribbon is exposed in the atmosphere it form a layer of magnesium oxide on its surface.

♤ This layer of magnesium oxide is stable compound to prevent further reaction of magnesium with oxygen.

♤ Hence, it should be cleaned before burning in air to remove this layer so that the metal can be exposed to air properly.
