Explanation: magnesium instantly reacts with oxygen present in the air, which forms MgO. MgO blocks the actual reaction which has to be taken place. hence to obtain pure Mg ribbon it must be cleaned.

Answer:

It is so because magnesium is a very reactive metal and it reacts with oxygen present in the air and forms a layer of magnesium oxide on it and the layer of magnesium oxide is highly stable and does it prevents the for the reaction of magnesium with oxygen so that is why it is necessary in the magnesium ribbon should be cleaned with sandpaper before burning it in the air in the presence of the oxygen so that the underlying methods can also be exposed to the air
