The word "Mahatma" means great high-souled  or great soul. This word is given to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi on 1914 in South Africa because he give independence/freedom to India and also gives us many lessons. He did great things. That is why he is called mahatma Gandhi ( First by Rabindra Nath Tagore).
