This gained widespread acceptance due to Gandhi's role in the freedom struggle. Add to it, Nehru- Prime Minister of independent India addressed Gandhi as 'Bapu' (father) it contributed to Gandhi being known as 'Father of the Nation' informally. However as Aparajita mentions after a recent RTI filed, it has been declared officially that the Government cannot recognize Gandhi as 'Father of the Nation'.
