Answer:

Mahatma Gandhi is the Father of the Nation and people hold him in high esteem which is far beyond any formal recognition, the Supreme Court said on Friday, refusing to direct the government to honour him with the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award.

Answer:

Mahatma Gandhi ( the symbol of non violence ) was nominated for noble peace prize in 1937,1938,1939 and in 1947. But he was never awarded the prize.

There are many reasons,

In the early decades of the 20 th century, the noble prize was at large awarded to the people of Europe and America.

Awarding the noble prize to Gandhi would anger the British, as Gandhi was an anti colonialist and anti British freedom fighter.

Gandhi was some times criticised as man who worked largely for the welfare of the poor of India and not the poor of the world.

When his name was considered during 1937,1938 and 1939, he was eliminated as he was argued as a man of both peace and war. According to the committee, the mass movements of Gandhi at times led to violence.( Chauri Chaura incident of 1922 ).

Similarly, when his name was considered in 1947- 48, he was argued to have acheived both good and bad for the country. ( Independence and partition ).

Moreover, when Gandhi was assassinated in January 30, 1948, the committee did not want to consider his name, as it would lead to awarding the prize to a man posthumously.

What about Bharat Ratna ?

Bharat Ratna was instituted in 1954. (long after the death of Gandhi).

In the initial years, our leaders were too busy in awarding the Bharat Ratna among themselves. (it leaves no time for them to think about Gandhi).

I could not understand the mere fact that, the highest civilian award was conferred upon by the highest civilian authority by themselves. (Jawaharlal Nehru awarded it to himself, Indira Gandhi awarded it to herself and many other presidents did the same).

Bharat Ratna, at times were awarded to the leaders posthumously. This often opens the pandora box.

Madan Mohan Malaviya was awarded Bharat Ratna in 2015, 68 years after his death in 1946. Some people have demanded that so many leaders have to be given the honour posthumously.

They suggested list includes people like Subash Chandra Bose, Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Rabindranath Tagore etc..

Can we suggest more names like, Jhansi Rani, Chatrapathi Shivaji, Akbar, Chandragupta Maurya, Ashoka, Bindusara etc… !!! ???

Most of the global/ national recognitions and awards have become a tool in the hands of vested interests and Politicians.

We need not have to worry about, why Gandhi was not conferred the Noble prize or Bharat Ratna .

Mahatma Gandhi had become far more important than any awards or recognitions.

The greatest award we can ever give to him, is to follow the principles he preached us.
