Gandhiji returned India at the request of Gopal Krishna Gokhale ( also his political mentor in India), conveyed to him by C.F. Andrews. He requested him as ongoing national struggle in India saw a politial struggle vacuum as rift between moderate and extremists ( Surat split 1907), Tilak was in jail (1908–1914), etc. conditions prevailed. Gandhiji was famous as he got huge international reputation for his works at South Africa. There he protested for infringement of civil liberties such as ban on Indian immigration, nullification of non-Christian marriages, racial discrimination, his method of satyagraha and non-violent movements had a widespread popularity, organised Indian ambulance corps during Boer war (1899) for which he was awarded Kaisar-i-Hind also.
