It is also called representative democracy.
This is done so because-
The population is so much that it is physically impossible for the whole population to sit together. So representatives are elected.
Moreover every citizen does not have enough time and skill to take all these decisions.So the people rule through their elected representatives.

As everyone can't be elected in Parliament so a representative is elected from every place to represent that particular area and to put the problem of that place in Parliament, this is how a majority of the people rule through their elected representatives.
