Answer:

Australia is very large both north-to-south and east-to-west, so the climate can be radically different from place to place.

Just looking at the expected maximums for the state and territory capitals today (6 August, which is our winter), I can see the following temperatures in Celsius:

Sydney: Maximum 15 and sunny, currently 9.4

Melbourne: Maximum 13 and a shower or two, currently 7.1

Brisbane: Max 26 and sunny, currently 12.8

Perth: Max 18 and partly cloudy, currently 6.2

Adelaide: Max 12 and cloudy, currently 8.1

Hobart: Max 10 and light showers, currently 7.1

Canberra: Max 11 and morning fog and frost, currently -1.5

Darwin: Max 30 and partly cloudy, currently 22.7

As you can probably see, the climate is quite different in different places. Canberra in winter regularly drops below feezing, while Darwin really doesn’t have a “winter” as it’s up in the tropics.

Living in Brisbane, I can safely say that most of our summers are the sort you’d want airconditioning for since they get pretty warm. You may not need it every day, but when you do need it, you notice. Our winters tend to be in the low 20s at the coldest during the day (the joke runs that if the maximum has a 1 in front of it, we panic and pull out our warmest clothes). Melbourne, on the other hand, definitely has four seasons - often in the one day.

Comparing a country the size of Australia to the ones listed really doesn’t make sense. While Indonesia’s large east-to-west, it isn’t north-to-south, which has an impact.
