Because the native manufacturers were unable to compete with the cheap and durable goods from manchester.Manchester goods were exported to India in such profusion that Indian textiles could not keep pace.

Manchester comes to India:

* Import duties on cotton Textiles in Britain:

Industrial groups pressurized the government to impose import duties on cotton textiles so that Manchester goods could sell in Britain without competition.

* Exports of British cotton goods increased:

Industrialist persuaded the EEIC to sell British manufactured goods in India which resulted in dramatiic increase in exports of British goods.

* Problems faced by the Indian cotton weavers:

They faced two problems at the same time - there export market collapsed and

the local market shrank

- Weavers could not compete with

the imported cheap cotton goods.

* insufficient amount of raw cotton to weavers:

When US Civil War broke out, cotton supplies from US were cutoff so Britain turn to India. Raw cotton exports from India increased and prices of cotton shot up. Weavers were forced to buy raw cotton at very high prices.

* Industries set up in India:

Factories in India begin production, flooding the market with machine goods.
