Why is Bengali language so sweet to speak and listen?
Hi Anonymous,
This is a very subjective question. I assume your mother tongue in Bengali, may be due to the reason, you find your language to be easy to convey your feelings thus termed as sweet. A Tamilian will find Tamil sweet to speak. A Maharashtrian will prefer Marathi and same for a Punjabi. Bengali language was heavily derived from Persian, Arabic (during Sultanate and Mughal periods), Hindi, Bhojpuri, Maithili, and foreign languages like English, French, Portugese (during colonial era). Languages are nothing but orderly mechanical vibrations in air, created by our tongue when it hit the different parts of the interior of our mouth to convey an emotion. If there are more expressible sounds (i.e. vowels and consonants) available, you have to speak less to convey a certain message. As Bengali language has evolved from Sanskrit and Magadhi Prakrit, the script has over 52 letters so you have sufficient amount of sound to convert your feelings.
Sanskrit sounds are simplified in Bengali language for ease of use, for example, so the use of অ is modified. Sanskrit words that ended with অ, are modified with ও, for example: Vivekanand is Vivekanondo or my name is written as Pratik Sarkar as per Sanskrit but it is spoken as Pro-teek-Sor-Kaar. The এ is modified as য-ফলা as in Khela becomes Khyala. The three শ/ষ/স is compacted into শ letter. The র/ঢ়/ড় becomes র only. All the half tones are avoided. Any letter which is added to ম, is pronounced as the letter itself, for example: Bhisma is pronounced as Bhisso. Sometimes these are termed as Opobhrongsho which leads to several dialects of Bengali language. The change of the form of verbs with the change in gender is also missing. Also the relation between Bengalis and Sweets (like roshogolla, pantua) led to a conviction that Bengali is the sweet language though these type of characteristics can be found in several other languages worldwide.
