Why many educated indians not joined the revolt of 1857

They did not wanted the old mughal period to happen again.they knew the atrocities that were commited on the people who participated in the revolt by the british.they did not want to be mistreated. Most of the educated Indians participated in the Swaraj movement directly or supported it .
