The leaders of the Maratha confederate did not have unity of purpose or action. With the departure of able leaders and statesmen such as Nana Phadnavis and Baji Rao I, the Maratha state lacked direction. The Maratha methods of warfare were woefully archaic and no match for the modern tactics of the Company army.
