Marx argued that industrial society was 'Capitalist' because he argued that the Industrial Revolution made a gap between the owners and workers even bigger, that would change and the class would rise up and over throw capitalism. Under capitalism the bourgeoisie owned the means of production and the proletariat did not.  The Revolution made the gap size increase between the workers and owners. Thus, the working conditions were terrible and workers didnt have any basic rights. He saw it as the latest stage of man's development towards towards communism.
