Explanation:
- Before Maxwell, there were three correct and one wrong equation.
- When Maxwell corrected the fourth equation, we got a system that, not only united the electric and magnetic fields into one entity, but it also gave us the electromagnetic waves, which is used in telecommunications and other branches.
- There are two equations, written in modern terminology using divergence vector. These equations tells us that the source of electric field is the electric charge density, and there is no source for magnetic field given by the divergence of the magnetic field. Right of side of that equation is zero.
- Then, there are the equations given by the rotation of electric and magnetic fields.
- Faraday’s law tells ıs that rotation of the electric field is given by the time derivative of the magnetic field.
- This gives another source for the electric field. Ampere’s law, before Maxwell added the extra term, tells us that rotation of the magnetic field is equal to the electric current.
- That means in vacuum, with no electric charge or current, we can not have magnetic field. This is not true.
- Maxwell adds the time derivative of electric field to this equation. Then, in vacuum, we see that time derivative of magnetic field creates electric field, and time derivative of electric field creates magnetic field. Both fields sustain the other one.
- It is one single system. Furthermore, this addition removes the mathematical inconsistency in the set of equations. Now the electric charge is conserved.
