Why melting and boiling point increases in group 17?

In group 17 the size of the elements is large as compared to other elements in their period. This is due to the more no. of electrons present in the outermost shell which reduces the sheilding effect. due to this the energy required to break the elements is very high.
Therefore group 17 elements have high melting and boiling point.
