→ Dmitri Mendeleev was not the first chemist to leave gaps in a table of the elements. He initially organized the elements by atomic weight, leading to a table where some elements followed the periodic law* and did their own homework but others did not. Mendeleev dealt with this by leaving gaps and in some cases switching the places of elements based on their chemical properties rather than atomic weight (this caused the elements to be ordered based on what we now know as atomic number).

→ The gaps in the periodic table were put there for no deeper reason than to make the table follow the periodic law. Mendeleev was the first to realize that the eight gaps in his table indicated that there were undiscovered elements that fit into those gaps. He was also able to use the periodic table to predict some properties of both discovered and undiscovered elements.

Properties of elements recurr at regular intervals.
