For Gregor Mendel, pea plants were fundamental in allowing him to understand the means by which traits are inherited between parent and offspring. He chose pea plants because they were easy to grow, could be bred rapidly, and had several observable characteristics, like petal color and pea color.

Mendel selected garden pea for his experim ent for  following reasons :-

The life span of this plant is very short so  results can be obtained and studied faster.

Garden pea had many characteristics which  are in constant to each other.

Moreover this plant is small, easy to grow and  reproduce large number of offsprings.
