why Mendeleev couldn't give the position to hydrogen in periodic table?

Because Hydrogen has mono valent electronic configuration and losses electron to form electro positive characters which are similar to group one elements ie.,alkali elements but it also for oxides and chloride similar to group 17 ie., halogens

becoz hydrogen has monovalent character and it can both loose or gain or share electrons...
hence mandleev failed to assign a position to it
