Mercury is the only one in liquid state at room temperature. It's used in thermometers because it has high coefficient of expansion. Hence, the slightest change in temperature is notable when it's used in athermometer. It also has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.

METAL IS USED AS THERMOMETRIC LIQUID FOR THE FOLLOWING REASON:------
•It is very reflective, so its easy to see and the read accurately.
•It is a metal ,so its a good conductor of heat. This means that it reacts quickly to changes of temperature.
•It doesn't wet the glass ,so you don't get inaccurate reading if the temperature is falling.
•It expand evenly with temperature , so a linear scale can be used with quit a high degree of accurance.
