why mercury is used in capillary tube instead of water

The main reason is density. mercury is more dens than water. So the rise of mercury in the capillary tine will be far less than water.

mercury is used in capillary tube because mercury is good conductor of heat. if we use water instead of mercury the water immediately falls down and it does not allow us to see the temperature. but mercury allows us to see the temperature for sometime
