Answer Because it have less density

Explanation:

Due to less density it do not rise much high and the thermometer can be made of less length .

It also doesn't stick to the wall of thermometer

mercury is the only metal which is liquid at room temperature this is used in thermometer because it has high coefficient of expansion hence the slightest change in temperature is notable when it used in thermometer
