Mercury is the only metal tgat is liquid at room temperature .

It detects even slight changes in temperature .

It has a higher freezing point so it is not used in cold region becuse it will freeze snd will not move in thermometer .

So .....

For cold region a lower freezing point liquid is used for example alcohol is used in such regions in thermometer .
