why metal does not react with base

Metals does not react with base because most metals do not react with bases, but Zinc is amphoteric it reacts with acids as well as bases. Zinc reacts with NaOH in aqueous medium to produce sodium zincate.

Zn + 2 H2O + 2 NaOH → Na2Zn(OH)4 + H2
