Metallic and non-metallic oxides:

Metallic oxides are basic in nature

  • When a metal reacts with oxygen it leads to the production of metallic oxides.
  • Usually, metallic oxides are basic in nature. It is because when they are reacted with water it leads to the formation of a basic solution.
  • For example, when calcium oxide is dissolved in water it leads to the formation of calcium hydroxide solution which is basic in nature.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

CaO+H_2O\rightarrow CaOH

Non-metallic oxides are acidic in nature

  • When a non-metal reacts with oxygen it leads to the production of non -metallic oxides.
  • Usually, non-metallic oxides are acidic in nature. It is because when they are reacted with water it leads to the formation of the acidic solution.
  • For example, when Sulfur dioxide is dissolved in water it leads to the formation of sulfurous acid solution which is acidic in nature.
  • The chemical equation involved in the reaction is as follows:

SO_2+H_2O\rightarrow H_2SO_3
