Why metallic oxides don't release H2 when added to H2O whereas metals do??​

Metals react with water and produce a metal oxide and hydrogen gas.However, they react moderately with steam when heated and give hydrogen gas and metal oxides.

This is because metaL oxides are basic in nature and as we all know, base release hydroxide ion not hydrogen ion . therefore, metal oxides do not release H2 when react with water whereas metal release H2 on reaction with water....
