. metals form positive ions because when they loses electrons ( for attaining noble gas configuration ) then the number of electrons is less and number of protons is more which produces a net positive charge on the elements of metal .
non metal .
. when they gain electron then number of electrons is more but number of protons is less which produces a net negative charge on the non metals atom and hence they produces negative ions.
