Why metals are called electropositive in nature and non- metals are called electronegative in nature?

Electronegativity is the tendency to gain electrons in a reaction in order to complete the octate.

Metals have larger size with respect to non metals hence they are capable to lose one electron.

As non metals have smaller size their electrons are held closer to the nucleus and therefore nuclear charge is higher and they tend to gain electron to complete their octate.
