Metals are electropositive in nature.

Also, giving away electrons consumes lesser energy than accepting electrons as in the case of metals.

E.g electronic configuration of a metal sodium is 1s^2, 2s^2, 2p^6, 3s^1.

In this case, it requires lesser energy for sodium to lose one electron than to gain 7 electrons.
