This is because its Mg2+ and O2- , Ions have a greater number of charges .
# magnesium oxide stays solid at such high temperatures , it remains non-conductive.

MgO is a non molecular solid, held together by strong electrostatic bonds. The material consists of an infinite array of magnesium and oxide ions that are held together by strong electrostatic bonds that persists throughout the entire lattice. the melting point of MgO is 2852 Celsius. That of MgCl2 is 714 Celsius . clearly the double charge of each constituent ion in MgO strengthens the electrostatic interaction.
