mitochondria are the main street of cell respiration .They use molecular Oxygen and bring about stepwise oxidation of food stuffs present in the cells to carbon dioxide and water oxidation of food releases energy which is temporary stored to form high energy ATP (adenosine triphosphate ) molecules. ATP is used to bring about energy requiring activities of the cell .On this account the mitochondria are often described as the powerhouse all storage batteries off the shelf and ATP is known as energy currency of the cell.

mitochondria are capable of self deprecation they have DNA, RNA, ribosomes and enzymes. They are able to synthesise some of their own proteins hand comma they are regarded as semi autonomous organelles.

mitochondria is called as power house of cell because it is responsible for producing most of the cell's energy or adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP). Cell can produce two ATP by breaking down a glycogen molecules, but the mitochondria is able to produce up to 36ATP .
