Mitochondria synthesises energy rich compounds known as adenosine triphosphate or ATP which is used through the cell for the chemical reactions.Mitochondria also provides important intermediates for the synthesis of several important biochemicals. Some amino acids are also formed in mitochondria .Thus a lot of chemical reactions take place  in mitochondria and it provide many chemical compounds to the cell and hence they are called chemical factory of the cell.
