Why mitochondria is known as power house of the cell. (explain in 5 point)
Answers
1.Mitochondriais called the powerhouse of cell. They are so called because they carry out the process of aerobic respiration and generate the energy molecules (ATP or adenosine Triphosphate) for cell operation. ...
2. Mitochondria is called the powerhouse of cell.they generate most of a cell's supply of chemical energy. But at least one type of complex cell doesn't need 'em, it turns out.
3.Most chemical reactions involved in cellular respiration occur in the mitochondria.
4.The energy required for various chemical activities needed for life is released by the mitochondria in the form of ATP (Adenosine triphosphate) molecules.
5. For this reason, mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of cells.
Why is the mitochondrion called the powerhouse of a cell?
Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell because they are responsible for the release of energy from food ,i.e, cellular respiration. This energy isreleased in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy currency of the cell.
While the cells release 2 ATP, mitochondria releases 34 ATP which adds up to 36 ATP. Since a major portion of the ATP is released by mitochondria, they are called the powerhouse of the cell
Mitochondria called the pow
Mitochondria is involved in the cellular respiration and it produces energy from food. It is actually the main organelle in the cell producing energy. So it is called the power house of the cell.
The cells that need more energy have more number of mitochondria,eg: flight muscles of birds etc.
The Universe tends toward entropy (a greater state of disorder). The basic idea in biology is that a biological organism resists entropy, and instead imposes some sort of order. So instead of equilibrium (which would be death), a biological cell achieves homeostasis (in part by having a cell membrane that keeps some stuff in, and other stuff out). Because this is exactly the opposite of what happens in the Universe, it takes energy.
In humans, we get our energy from “reduced organics” (carbon-based molecules with relatively high energy in them, like carbohydrates and fats). The process of turning the raw material — reduced organics — into a form of energy that’s usable for the whole body — ATP — is done in the mitochondria.
It’s similar to the way that coal is turned into electricity. A normal household can’t use the energy in coal in its raw form, it has to be converted into some sort of useable form (electricity), and that process occurs at the power plant. In both cases, the raw material is oxidized to generate energy. In the case of a coal power plant, the oxidation is rapid and causes fire, while in the mitochondria, the process is much smaller scale and controlled, and therefore generates far less heat. For this reason, biological “engines” are far more efficient than human-made ones.
Once a power system like the mitochondria has evolved, other biological features can evolve that use that energy, and which aren’t just the basics of resisting entropy, like muscle tissue, fat tissue, neurons, etc. (although at a philosophical level, one could argue that all functions of life are directed to sustaining and propagating life, and thus to reduce entropy).
