Mitochondria are tiny organelles inside cells that are involved in releasing energy from food. This process is known as cellular respiration. It is for this reason that mitochondria are often referred to as the powerhouses of the cell.

●Mitochondria are called the powerhouse of the cell becuase mitochondria function to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is the main fuel source used throughout the body. For example, the mitochondria will process glucose (a form of carbohydrate/sugar) to produce ATP.

●The ATP produced by the mitochondria is used to provide energy to the body in order for the body to perform its various functions, such as pumping blood through the heart or contracting the leg muscles while walking.
