Modern democracies cannot exist without political parties because of the following reasons:-

1. Political parties contest elections and form government. If only individual candidates contest elections and form government then they will be accountable for their constituencies but no one will be accountable for how the country will be run.

2. Parties have many important functions such as formulating laws. The laws have to be passed through parliament but since the parliament is dominated by winning party's members, the laws generally are shaped by them.

3. Parties that lost the election oppose the policies of the winning party, voice other opinions and criticise the winning party's decisions. This makes democracy stronger as better laws and policies can be formulated.

4. Parties provide the common people access to government machinery, schemes and welfare programmes. People usually feel more comfortable in going to a party member with their grievances rather than a party leader/member of parliament.

5. Parties shape public opinion. Parties involve partisanship. They raise and highlight issues that are important. They have many members and supporters spread across the country and often opinions of the public crystallise on the line the party takes.
