IT got popularity because it explains paramagnetic behaviour of molecules .
As that of O2 .
Molecular orbital theory states that :-
Orbitals are filled according to hund's rule and aufbau principle .
Orbitals have specific energy .

molecular orbital theoryis experimental and is prooved ...but valence bond theory is just theoratical which doesn't explain filling of electrons completely..for example there is anti bonding orbital also which can be only seen in molecular orbital theory not in vbt.. magnetic behavior of molecules are also explained well by molecular orbital theory.
