Why more amount of carbon dioxide is released than the amount of oxygen we take in?

During daylight hours, plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen through photosynthesis, and at night only about half that carbon is then released through respiration. However, plants still remain a net carbon sink, meaning they absorb more than they emit.

♐When the cell uses oxygen to break down sugar, oxygen is used, carbon dioxide is produced, and energy is released. But instead of heat energy, much of the energy produced in cellular respiration is stored chemically for the cell to use later.
