bcoz ....

Democratic governments have tendencies to make better long term decisions, Autocracies mostly excel at fast reactions.

Both can be very effective with commitment and successful bureaucracy. Both can be inefficient if these conditions aren't met.

Democracy is bettet at preventing unrest when people believe they still have a say. Politicians are inherently people who want the most power. In a democracy, they must compete for it, so they at least make some decisions. In an Autocracy, once a tyrant establishes himself, it's game over for the country.

However, a genuine autocrat is better than any kind of parliamentary system, in both planning and decision making. These people are so rare, they should be proclaimed saints. Check Singapore for example.

The reality is, that autocracies today are prevalently unsuccessful in politics, simply because autocrats don't have as many incentives to do their job.

Though many autocratic countries would be impoverished anyways, growth needs time under any system. A change to US style democracy + free market capitalism could make you the US in 200 years, or more, depending on the geography. (You can't expect to get rich from oil, if you're living somewhere where oil isn't)

Democracy is promoted by the superpowers now, and is always the stabler system of the two. You could see a surge of authoritarianism after WW1 too, it was simply seen as the more successful system
