Answer:

We live in a country where the knowledge and status of a person in measured is terms of the language we speak !!! I have often seen guys with brilliant skills feel intimidated at the plight of their English skills. Such people feel that if they will speak in Hindi (or any other national language) then the person on other side may think them "illiterate or of a lower status". I remember a funny situation that happened with me -- I called a taxi company and queried in Hindi. The operator on the other side started conversing in English. So, I thought maybe it’s my turn to respond back in English. After, couple minutes into the conversation, the operator reverted back to Hindi. Isn't it funny, the operator should have started conversation in Hindi, to avoid such a situation?

Indians are trained to converse in English and not in Hindi.

I ll tell you when the seeds of language preferences are sowed.

During school years, when the children are about 10 years of age, they are punished when they speak in Hindi and are rewarded when they talk in English by their school teachers. ( Particularly in North India)

And thus, according to Skinners theory of reinforcements, children learn to speak in English only and consider speaking in Hindi, a sinful act.

When these children grow up, they tease and judge other people talking in Hindi.

Therefore, as a result , Indians become hesitant talking to people in their own native language, in which they are comfortable and which makes them unique and different from the world.
