Why most of the rivers form distributaries before flowing into the sea?

before flowing into sea the rivers form distributaries.this is because the land where river joins the sea is very gentle and the load carrying capacity of river decreases.as a result the river deposits the sediments on the mouth.the velocity of the river being slow cannot carry the loads with them and form distributaries which cuts through the deposited sediments
