Because copper is the best conductorof electricity of the easily used metals. Aluminum is also used in wiring, but it cannot be used along with copperwithout special precautions. Other metals are better conductors but they are either too dangerous to use or are unsuitable because of their chemical reactivity.

Copper wires have very high melting point, resistivity and is a good conductor of electricity. They are also inexpensive.
