Motion of a particle can be simple harmonic(SHM) if there exist a centralized force which is proportional to its displacement from center (directed towards center). But in case of earth there exist a centralized force that acts towards center (sun) but it is proportional to inverse of square of the displacement between earth and sun thats why motion can't be SHM.
