In recent years, the multipurpose projects and large dams have come under great scrutiny and opposition for the following reasons:
- Regulating and damming of rivers, affect their natural flow resulting in poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the bottom of the reservoir.
-Dams also divide rivers into channels making it difficult for aquatic fauna(animals) to migrate, especially for spawning.
-The reservoir that are built on the foodplains also submerge the existence vegetation and soil leading to its decomposition over time.
-Dams also create conflict between different people wanting different uses from the same water resources.
-Farmers were shifted to water intensive and commercial crops.
