why must both the objective and the eye piece of a compound microscope have short focal length?

short focal lenghth don cause disturbance in magnification and distance of obeject and image

In a compound microscope , magnifying power = (L/fo)(D/fe)

Hence, to increase magnifying power. both foand fe must be small.
