Hey Mate
A chemical reaction may give off a gas, and perhaps in small doses, it won't hurt you. When you're in a well ventilated area, the gas mixes with the air, so it's really "diluted", if you will. If you're in a space where there's not a lot of fresh air, the gas the reaction gives off could harm you.
