Why N-O bond in no2- is shorter than in no3-

saakethram: NO2 has effective bond order of 2.0 (of N-O bond). While in NO3-, bond order is 5/3 (visualize all it's canonical forms). Recall the logic of higher the bond order, shorter is the bond length and vice versa

N-O bond in N-O2 is shorter than in NO3 because bond length increases with decreasing bond order and the N-O bond order in NO3 is less than the N-O bond order in NO2 .

Answer:

here u go

Explanation:

in NO3- lone pair shared between three O atoms hence bond order od NO bond is 1 + 1/3 = 4/3

greater the bond order shorter the bond. hence bond length of NO2- less than that of NO3-
